Birbies
"Feeding wild birds is a deceptively commonplace activity. Yet, it is one of the most intimate, private, and potentially profound forms of human interaction with nature. This perceptive study uncovers some of the remarkable depth associated with bird feeding and discerns that people who feed birds are alert to a wide range of additional natural phenomena,"
(Jones, Darryl, professor at the Environmental Futures Research Institute and School of Environment and Sciences at Griffith University in Australia).
The aim of this research and product creation called Birbies is to know why human feed birds human food, to create awareness regarding wild birds and waterfowlers feeding, to prevent death of the birds and waterfowlers caused by unsuitable feeds, and also to provide a solution to the problem. One of the main food that humans tend to feed birds is bread. Not only that it is not nutritional for them, but also can lead to many health problems, one of them being ‘Angel wings’ where the birds, ducks and geese can’t swim anymore which can lead to their demise. The solution I provide is to create a handy alternative to bread that can be obtain in the same place as bread - bakeries. Instead of feeding the birds the bread, why not Birbies?
Birbies is a seed base bakery wrapper that is fully digestible by animals, zero waste, 100% biodegradable and safe for the environment. Made out of mix of sunflower, hemp, chia, psyllium, rice starch, edible cellulose for the paper and pure gelatine for the see through “plasticky” parts. One of them have a little cheeky bug surprise!
The mediums used for this project are: Digital (Adobe Creative Suite) and manual handcraft (paper making kit, blender, hand mesh, etc)
