Synaesthesia

and its’ influence on synaesthetic artist’s creative process

This project is my master final thesis. The name for the project is Cerberus Senses, taken from the three-headed dog who guards the door to the underworld. The Underworld is coincidentally also the name of one of the primary research methods done during the making of this thesis.

The aims of this project are firstly, to let more people know regarding the neurological phenomenon, Synaesthesia and to know more about how Synaesthesia influences an artist’s creative process.

For this project, I created a magazine containing my thesis paper, including primary and secondary research method. I also created a small room with multiple furnitures inside that were designed during an exposure research method. What this mean is that each of the furniture were decorated and / or created whilst listening to a specific song and what I, as a synaesthetes, experienced during listening to the song on repeat is shown on each of the furniture item.

Next to the furniture, I also created a tote bag with a see through window pouch that symbolised a person with Synaesthesia and how synaesthetes see and experiences things more than what it is shown (what is shown is what is on the see through window slot and what synaesthetes experiences is what is inside the tote bag). The set also came with 7 different designs of days of the week cards which fits on the see through window and is exchangeable daily. For the presentation, few other items were also created, such as: a ring, in the shape of days of the week as how I perceive and experience it, alphabet cookies with different colour and flavour for each letter.

The mediums used for this project are digital (Adobe Creative Suite, Procreate) and mixed media craft using mostly recycled and second-hand materials.
